Annette Hughes - Manager.
Part time 4 days Mon - Thurs.
Originally trained as a nurse, then qualifying as social worker, Annette spent 3 years volunteering in Mozambique supporting rural community groups and volunteering projects through an international development agency. This life changing experience drove Annette to follow a career with an international context and in areas of justice and equality. Following a short spell of working with the local government on return to the UK Annette was pleased to become the first Project Coordinator for Refugee Support Devon in 2003.
Nelida Montes de Oca - Casework Coordinator. Neli oversees the Drop-in and Immigration Clinic Services and coordinates volunteers providing ongoing outreach to clients.
Part time 3 days Tues - Thurs.
Neli left her home country of Mexico to join her husband in the UK in 2007. She has vast experience in the charitable sector supporting a variety of people, from BAME groups, homeless people, ex-offenders, and refugees and migrants when she joined RSD in 2016. With a MSc in Psychosocial studies from UWE in Bristol, and experiences from her home country, Neli is knowledgeable about collective traumas experienced by groups and nations caused by wars and segregation and this informs her passion to support people seeking safety and a better life. Having personal experience of the UK immigration system Neli is able to support people with immigration issues with great understanding.
Tameem Shaaban -Resettlement Coordinator, providing welcome and support services to families resettled in Devon through the Government's Vulnerable Persons' Resettlement Scheme. Tameem divides his time between Exeter and our satellite office in Newton Abbot.
Full Time Mon - Fri.
Coming from a business background with 15 years trading experience in the United Arab Emirates, Tameem became a refugee in the UK in 2015 due to the Syrian war. He invested his time wisely while waiting for his immigration status - volunteering with the British Red Cross, becoming one of the project coordinators in the refugee and asylum support team and receiving much training including travelling to Switzerland to learn more about the International Committee of the Red Cross. Tameem joined RSD in 2017 and, alongside other colleagues, has been working with resettled families applying the experiences he has been accumulating since he arrived in the UK in 2015.
Souad Fadel - Resettlement Coordinator, providing welcome and support services to families resettled in Devon through the Government's Vulnerable Persons' Resettlement Scheme. Souad is based in our Exeter office.
Full Time Mon - Fri.
Initially a lecturer at Benghazi university in Libya, Souad came to the UK in 2007 to complete her Politics PHD, focusing on immigrants and refugees, at Exeter University. With a clear understanding about risks people take to find safety, and vast volunteering experience with diverse groups in Exeter including being Vice Principle at Exeter Muslim Association, Souad has much experience and knowledge that she applies to her roles within RSD – as a volunteer to start and since 2018 a full time team member supporting resettled refugee families and RSD’s women’s group.
Denise Parker - Education and Employability Coordinator. Denise coordinates our team of ESOL volunteer teachers and helps service users to access local vocational and academic training to help move them towards employment.
Part time flexible.
Denise’s professional career has spanned nearly 50 years in many contexts associated with teaching English. She has worked in the UK and abroad as a TEFL teacher and online teacher trainer, EAP specialist in Business and Medicine, assessor for IELTS and Trinity College London exams and taught ESOL in Sussex, Hampshire and Devon. She started with RSD as a volunteer ESOL tutor specialising in Medical English to work with refugee doctors. Following retirement from the University of Exeter Denise joined our staff team as ESOL & Employability Coordinator where her vast skills and experience are in great demand.
Trupti Desai - Administrator.
Part time Mon - Wed.
Trupti worked for the British Council for over 20 years before joining the RSD team as an Administrator in 2013. Her work with the British Council led her to work in countries such as the Gaza Strip, India and Thailand. Working mainly in partnership with other NGOs Trupti developed an acute awareness of the needs of people at grassroots level and engaging them in all aspects of the British Council’s work. Trupti transfers her excellent managerial and administrative skills to RSD, bringing in some order where there is often chaos!
Nick Floyd - Administrative assistant.
Part time Wed - Fri.
Originally trained as a microbiologist Nick eventually left science to pursue a career change and explore a range of new activities, including qualifying as an ESOL teacher and living and teaching in Malaysia. On return to the UK Nick worked as enrolments administrator in a language school for over 10 years, bringing his wealth of skills to RSD as admin assistant in January 2018.
