"I've met beautiful people with extraordinary stories..."| #VolunteersWeek
Ahlan!
It’s Volunteers’ Week! My name is Haya, and I’ve recently finished volunteering once a week for just over six months at Refugee Support Devon’s drop-in centre, alongside my studies at Exeter University.
During my time there, I supported refugees and people seeking asylum in the local community with everything from filling out paperwork and registering with a GP, to enrolling in college or education, and signposting people to our Immigration Advice team for more specialist legal support.
Since September, I’ve had an insight into everything that goes on behind the scenes, and I’ve seen first-hand how Refugee Support Devon is a real lifeline. The weekly drop-in sessions help people navigate life in the UK, while also offering a listening ear and a sense of community to those who are struggling.
Coming in to volunteer each week truly became the highlight of my week. I’ve met beautiful people with extraordinary stories, and I’ve seen how this charity was built - and is still sustained - by neighbours helping neighbours.
This June, Refugee Support Devon is calling on the local community for support: neighbour to neighbour.
By becoming a monthly donor and giving just £5 a month, you can help provide vital stability for our community - keeping the drop-in centre running so the next volunteer who fills my role can continue supporting people seeking safety in Devon.
You might not be able to spare six months to volunteer like I did, but this is another way to make a real difference.
Help us reach 100 new monthly donors this June.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for standing with us.
Shukran,
Haya - Volunteer, Refugee Support Devon
