RSD and the crisis in Afghanistan

The tragedy currently unfolding in Afghanistan is foremost in our thoughts and our hearts go out to everyone who is being affected by it. The situation is changing every day and we promise not to inundate you with e-mails about this, but we would be grateful if you could please read what follows and share it with your networks. Further updates will appear on our website and social media pages as we get them.

1 The UK government is launching a new national resettlement scheme for Afghan refugees but we do not yet know any details about the scheme or the role (if any) that Devon will play in it. Information will be announced on the government's website so please keep checking this page for updated information.

2 We cannot begin recruiting new volunteers until we have more information about the scheme, and we are unable to accept donations of clothing and household items as we have no storage facilities. We are sincerely sorry to everybody who has offered assistance so far and has been disappointed that we have been unable to accept their offer. We ask you please to be patient and to keep checking our website and social media pages, we will publish more information and specific appeals for assistance in the coming weeks.

3 Please check local news pages to keep abreast of developments as the government formulates its scheme for Afghan resettlement. Local news networks will inform you about campaigns you can get involved with and petitions you can sign. You might consider contacting your local MP to let them know that Devon is a welcoming county for refugees, and that we all want Devon to play its part in assisting Afghan refugees!

4 If you have a spare room in your house and you would like to offer temporary shelter to a refugee, then you may wish to contact Room For Refugees. If you are a landlord with a property to rent, please consider letting it to a refugee family. Find out more by contacting Devon County Council.

5 A Helpline has been set up for non-British nationals in Afghanistan and the family members of non-British nationals in Afghanistan: please call +44 (0)24 7538 9980. Further information is available here.

Finally: Please consider making a donation, to help us continue supporting refugees and asylum seekers in Devon. Visit our website and click on the ‘donate now’ button in the top right-hand corner. If you would like to make a regular donation, please call us on 01392 682185 or e-mail info@refugeesupportdevon.org.uk
