Volunteers and clients meet with Exeter MP, Steve Race

On Friday, we were pleased to welcome Exeter MP, Steve Race to the Refugee Support Devon office.

We invited him to meet with us to follow up on our conversation in Parliament during the Mass Lobby for Migrants' Rights in March. Together with Praxis, for Migrants and Refugees, Citizens UK, and the NRPF Partnership, we raised our concerns about the Home Secretary's proposed Earned Settlement immigration system, a new set of policies that would make it even harder for refugees to settle in this country and rebuild lives free from uncertainty.

During the visit, Steve met with our clients and volunteers, who support refugees and people seeking sanctuary on the frontlines every week. They shared their lived experiences and spoke about how the proposed policies could affect individuals, families, and the communities we support.

Steve took our concerns to the Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Mike Tapp MP, who told us that an impact assessment will be carried out and that the results of the recent public consultation on the proposed policies will be published in due course, influencing any policies put in place.

We also discussed how Steve and his team can support our work across the city, particularly by advocating for people seeking safety in the face of rising hostility and misinformation.

Thank you Steve, for taking the time to listen and raise our concerns with the Minister for Migration, as well as learn more about the work we do to support refugees in Exeter.

We look forward to continuing the conversation and building stronger links in the months ahead.
