'I do not wish to be a burden' | We spoke to asylum seekers about recent anti-immigration protests in Devon
Recent anti-immigration rhetoric in the UK, and here in Devon, has a direct impact on the people we support - affecting their wellbeing, their sense of safety, and for some, their everyday lives, particularly with protests taking place outside hotels and detention centres. Much of this hostility is fuelled by misinformation and harmful narratives about people seeking asylum.
We spoke to some of our clients who are asylum seekers living in a contingency accommodation hotel in Devon. This is one response we received.*
In our daily conversations with the people we support, one phrase is repeated time and time again: “I do not wish to be a burden.” Many people seeking safety are desperate to contribute, but are not permitted to work and are forced to live in cramped conditions with little to no support.
Solidarity is a verb, and we will continue to stand alongside and advocate for refugees and asylum seekers in Devon.
